Onondaga County Jail Mugshots
The most important local fact is limited and specific: the Onondaga County Booking Section says the Identification function takes photo images of all inmates booked at the Justice Center and keeps those records. The public lookup pages reviewed in the research do not state in static text that every public inmate profile displays a mugshot. For that reason, the accurate public-access statement is that booking photos are taken at intake, public display must be checked in the live roster, and a photo that is not online may require a Sheriff's Office FOIL request subject to New York privacy review.
Onondaga County has two current-custody lookups. The Justice Center lookup covers people held at the Patrick J. Corbett Justice Center. The Corrections lookup covers people held by the Onondaga County Department of Correction at Jamesville Correctional Facility. Those systems are for current custody. Released people, older bookings, sealed cases, transferred state prisoners, federal prisoners, and immigration detainees may not appear in the local roster.
Find Onondaga County Booking Photos
Start with the official local custody system, not a third-party mugshot site. A booking photo, if publicly visible, would be tied to the current custody profile or booking record. If the live profile has no photo, New York FOIL still allows a request for sheriff records, but the agency may withhold or redact booking photographs under privacy language unless release serves a law-enforcement purpose.
- Search the Justice Center lookup for new arrests, court remands, Syracuse Police arrests, and downtown jail custody.
- Search the Corrections/Jamesville lookup for Department of Correction custody.
- Open any public name link and confirm whether a booking photo appears on the live profile.
- If no photo appears, prepare a Sheriff's Office FOIL request with the person's full name, facility, approximate booking date, and ICN or booking number if known.
- Use WebCriminal or the court clerk for filed charges after arrest, because court records and booking photos are separate records.
The county's official Booking Section page is the source tying intake to fingerprints and photo images.
The booking source supports that photo images are created at intake, but it does not make every booking photo publicly posted online.
Onondaga County Booking Photo Fields
A booking photo is only one part of a custody record. The related public and operational fields help identify the correct person and route follow-up requests. The research confirmed that the county lookup is current-custody focused, the booking record starts at intake, photo images and fingerprints are taken by Identification, ICN or booking number is used for mail and deposits, and VINE links are used for release notifications.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Photo image or mugshot | Taken during Justice Center booking; public display must be verified in the live lookup. |
| Name | Used to match a current custody profile or FOIL request. |
| Facility | Justice Center or Jamesville, depending on where the person is held. |
| ICN or booking number | Needed for mail, deposits, and precise records requests. |
| Current custody status | Shows current local custody only, not every past booking. |
| Charges or court information | May be present but should be verified through court records after filing. |
| VINE link | Allows release notification by phone or email when linked from the profile. |
Are Onondaga County Mugshots Public?
New York is not a state where every arrest photo should be described as automatically public. FOIL creates a right to request agency records, but the same law contains exemptions. The Committee on Open Government text for Public Officers Law section 87 includes privacy language for law-enforcement arrest or booking photographs. An agency may deny access when disclosure would be an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy unless public release serves a specific law-enforcement purpose and is otherwise lawful.
Key statutes:
New York Public Officers Law Article 6 establishes the state FOIL request process for agency records, subject to exemptions.
Public Officers Law section 87 privacy language allows withholding law-enforcement arrest or booking photographs unless a specific law-enforcement purpose supports release.
Criminal Procedure Law section 160.50 provides sealing after a criminal action terminates in favor of the accused.
Public and Withheld Booking Photos
What the public can see depends on the live roster, the facility, the record status, and FOIL review. The Justice Center and Jamesville lookups are current-custody systems. They are not historical mugshot archives. A booking photo may be taken and still not be displayed publicly. A record can also become restricted because the case is sealed, the person is released, the photo is withheld under FOIL privacy grounds, or another law blocks disclosure.
What is and isn't public: Current custody information may be searchable online, but New York law permits agencies to withhold booking photographs on privacy grounds. Verify any photo request through the Sheriff's Office FOIL process or the originating court record.
Request Onondaga County Booking Photos
Use the Onondaga County FOIL request form for Sheriff's Office records that are not available in the current lookup. The request should be narrow. Include the person's full name, approximate booking date, facility, ICN or booking number if known, and a clear request for booking photo or booking record material. Before filing, confirm current custody through Onondaga County jail inmate records. Do not add unsupported claims that the photo must be released. The agency must review the request under FOIL and any privacy, law-enforcement, sealed-record, or booking-photo limitations.
For court records after the same arrest, use WebCriminal, the City Court, town or village court, County Court Clerk, or County Clerk based on the case type. The court file may show the charges and disposition, but it is not the source for a county booking photo. If the question is whether a person remains in custody, use the Onondaga County jail roster before requesting a photo.
Mugshot Removal and Sealing
The local sheriff sources reviewed did not publish a dedicated mugshot-removal form. New York's booking-photo privacy language can reduce public release of arrest photos, but it is not the same as a simple removal request. If a case is dismissed or otherwise terminates in favor of the accused, CPL section 160.50 may seal official records through the court process. The Onondaga County court records after arrest path is the better place to verify dismissal, sealing, and disposition. That court process is separate from asking a private website to take down a copied image.
Commercial mugshot sites are not official custody sources and are not needed for Onondaga County records work. Do not pay a third-party site to infer custody status, charge status, or sealing eligibility. Verify records with the Sheriff's Office, WebCriminal, the court clerk, or counsel. Court sealing and dismissal issues are handled through the court system, not through the public roster.
State and Federal Booking Photos
State prison and federal custody have different photo rules and different locators. A person sentenced out of Onondaga County and transferred to state prison should be searched in the DOCCS incarcerated lookup, not the county roster. DOCCS profile photos, if shown, are state prison custody photos, not Justice Center booking photos. DOCCS can be searched by DIN, NYSID, or name with birth year.
Federal agencies generally do not publish mugshots the way some local jail sites do. The BOP locator is for federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present and can search by register number or name with demographic filters. A federal pretrial defendant may not appear in BOP yet, and a U.S. Marshals hold can still involve local jail custody. Immigration custody belongs in ICE ODLS, which searches by A-Number and country of birth or biographical information.
Note: A county booking photo, a DOCCS profile photo, and a federal custody record are different records from different agencies.
